In a historic move signaling Pan-African unity, Ghana’s outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo announced a landmark decision allowing visa-free travel for all African passport holders, effective at the start of this year. The announcement came during his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Friday, just days before he steps down after serving two terms since 2017.
“We have tried to make real many of the slogans that have dominated our public discourse since independence,” Akufo-Addo declared. “I am proud to have approved visa-free travel to Ghana for all African passport holders, with effect from the beginning of this year. This is the logical next step to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the workings of the largest trading bloc in the world.”
This bold policy aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, promoting the free movement of people and goods across the continent. By removing visa barriers, Ghana hopes to strengthen intra-African trade, cultural exchange, and tourism, setting a precedent for other nations to follow. For many, this decision represents a transformative step toward realizing a borderless Africa, fostering greater collaboration and shared prosperity among its people.
